What is Isuprel used for?

Isuprel is a prescription medicine that is used to treat certain types of abnormal heartbeats. It is used to treat heart failure (weak heart). Isuprel is also used to treat shock. Isuprel may be given to you for other reasons.

Description

Isoproterenol hydrochloride is 3,4-Dihydroxy-α-[(isopropylamino)methyl] benzyl alcohol hydrochloride, a synthetic sympathomimetic amine that is structurally related to epinephrine but acts almost exclusively on beta receptors. The molecular formula is C11H17NO3 ● HCl. It has a molecular weight of 247.72 and the following structural formula:

Isoproterenol hydrochloride is a racemic compound.

Each milliliter of the sterile solution contains:

Isoproterenol hydrochloride injection, USP 0.2 mg
Edetate Disodium (EDTA) 0.2 mg
Sodium Chloride 7.0 mg
Sodium Citrate, Dihydrate 2.07 mg
Citric Acid, Anhydrous 2.5 mg
Water for Injection 1.0 mL

The pH is adjusted between 3.5 and 4.5 with hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide.

The sterile solution is nonpyrogenic and can be administered by the intravenous, intramuscular, subcutaneous or intracardiac routes.

Before taking Isuprel, tell your doctor:

• If you are allergic to Isuprel; any part of this medicine; or any other drugs, foods, or substances. Tell your doctor about the allergy and what signs you had.
• If you have any of these health problems: Chest pain (angina), a fast heartbeat, or heart block from too much digoxin in your body.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all of your drugs (prescription or OTC, natural products, vitamins) and health problems. You must check to make sure that it is safe for you to take Isuprel with all of your drugs and health problems. Do not start, stop, or change the dose of any drug without checking with your doctor.

What are some things I need to know or do while I take Isuprel?

• Tell all of your health care providers that you take Isuprel. This includes your doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and dentists.
• Have blood work checked as you have been told by the doctor. Talk with the doctor.
• Check blood pressure and heart rate as the doctor has told you.
• If you are allergic to sulfites, talk with your doctor. Some products have sulfites.
• Use with care in children. Talk with the doctor.
• Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan on getting pregnant, or are breast-feeding. You will need to talk about the benefits and risks to you and the baby.

How is Isuprel best taken?

Use Isuprel as ordered by your doctor. Read all information given to you. Follow all instructions closely.

• It is given as an infusion into a vein over a period of time.
• It is given as a shot into a muscle, vein, or into the fatty part of the skin.

What do I do if I miss a dose?

• Call your doctor to find out what to do.

What are the side effects of Isuprel that I need to call my doctor about immediately?

WARNING/CAUTION: Even though it may be rare, some people may have very bad and sometimes deadly side effects when taking a drug. Tell your doctor or get medical help right away if you have any of the following signs or symptoms that may be related to a very bad side effect:

• Signs of an allergic reaction, like rash; hives; itching; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin with or without fever; wheezing; tightness in the chest or throat; trouble breathing, swallowing, or talking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat.
• Signs of high or low blood pressure like very bad headache or dizziness, passing out, or change in eyesight.
• Shortness of breath.
• Chest pain or pressure or a fast heartbeat.
• An abnormal heartbeat that is new or worse.
• Blurred eyesight.
• Sweating a lot.
• Shakiness.
• Pale skin.

What are some other side effects of Isuprel?

All drugs may cause side effects. However, many people have no side effects or only have minor side effects. Call your doctor or get medical help if any of these side effects or any other side effects bother you or do not go away:

• Headache.
• Feeling dizzy, tired, or weak.
• Feeling nervous and excitable.
• Upset stomach.
• Flushing.
